SIBU: Sibu Tower Run 2020 scheduled for March 8 will proceed despite Covid-19.

Sibu Municipal Council councillor Mohd Izkandar Dato Rosely, who is also the organising chairman, said the run will go ahead with safety measures put in place.

“We will do a health check on all participants before the run as a preventive measure, ” he said, adding that everyone would also be given face masks.

The event hosted by Sibu Municipal Council will take place at 6am at Wisma Sanyan.

It is currently the tallest building in the state, with 28 floors.

The organiser is Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) alumni association.

The run is to raise funds for MPI’s 23 poor students who need a total of RM70,000 for their studies.

The run targets to have 1,000 participants, he said.

“Due to coronavirus, the number may be less, ” Mohd Izkandar said.

A total of 300 have registered for the run.

They are from Sarawak (269), Peninsular Malaysia (26), the Philippines (3) and one each from Singapore and the United Kingdom.

“The only female runner from Singapore has confirmed her participation for the event.

“She will have to undergo a health check upon arrival in the state, ” he added.

The organising committee is also extending the registration deadline from Feb 15 to March 5.

He also confirmed that the run’s ambassador, Soh Wai Ching, will defend the title which he had won in the past two years.

Soh is currently World No 1 tower runner.

“In conjunction with the International Women’s Day celebration, we will be giving away flowers to all female participants on that day, ” Mohd Izkandar added.

The champion in each category stands to receive RM800 plus a trophy, second placed RM400 plus trophy, third RM300 plus trophy, fourth and fifth placing RM100 and sixth to 10th placing RM50.
