IT WAS just a few months ago that Tanjong MCA youth chief Lim Swee Bok, 37, lost his family in a fire, but somehow he has found the strength to contest in the upcoming election.

It is learnt that Lim will be fielded to contest in Pengkalan Kota, where he grew up and now lives.

The constituency, which has over 90% Chinese voters, is considered a tough one for Barisan.

However, Lim, who has been serving the community there for several years, said he had “no fear”.

Lim, who recently lost his mother, wife and children in a fire which gutted their two-storey house in the Macallum Street Ghaut area, said he was now emotionally and mentally ready to face all the challenges in life.

Knowing the area one is contesting in like the back of your hands is of the best advantages election an candidate can have. And this is something Lim is banking on.

“I was born here, went to school here and live here.

“I know the constituency well and understand what people here are hoping for,” he said.

Pengkalan Kota was held by Barisan Nasional for three terms by MCA’s Lee Hack Teik from 1995 to 2008.

However, Lee lost in his fourth battle against Lau Keng Ee from DAP, who is the current assemblyman.

“I focus on doing the right thing and it is up to the rakyat to decide if they want to give me or any other Barisan candidate the mandate,” Lim said.

He joined MCA 12 years ago and is now the party’s state performance management and delivery bureau deputy chief, Tanjong division deputy chief and division youth chief.

Lim is also active in community and non-governmental organisations.

He serves as adviser to the Macallum Street 1Malaysia Community Service and president for Penang Youth Council.
