If you’re craving adventure, volcano hiking may just be the thing you are looking for. Besides the thrill, this daring endeavour also gives you a sense of accomplishment.
Trekking through the rugged volcanic terrain and witnessing the smoky craters – and bright red lava – make the experience all the more fascinating.
The best part is that you don’t always have to hike for hours or days to get close to a volcano. Take Mount Bromo in Indonesia, you can climb to the top or hop on a jeep tour for a more relaxed experience.
Whether you’re just starting out or ready to take things up a notch, here are some volcanoes around the world worth adding to your list.
Mount Etna in Italy is the most active volcano in Europe.
1. Mount Etna (Italy)
Located within Etna National Park on the eastern coast of Sicily, Mount Etna is Europe’s tallest and most active volcano.
Standing over 3,300m high, the mountain has been shaped by centuries of eruptions that have formed today’s landscape.
According to Nasa’s Earth Observatory, Mount Etna, a Unesco World Heritage Site, has erupted nearly 200 times in the past 3,500 years. Its most recent episode occurred earlier this year, releasing large plumes of ash into the sky.
Despite being an active volcano, the mountain is generally safe to visit, as it is closely monitored by the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. Certified guides lead visitors only to designated safe areas.
Mount Etna is home to over 100 hiking trails, ranging from easy strolls through lava field to demanding high-altitude climbs. Access above 2,500m – including the four main craters – is only permitted with a licensed guide, largely due to safety concerns over the volcano’s unpredictable activity and uneven terrain.
Among the routes that are considered “easy” are Monti Sartorius and Piano Provenzana - Abisso Monte Nero, which offer spectacular views of the rugged volcanic landscape.

Guishan Island in Taiwan is a volcanic island shaped like a turtle.
2. Guishan Island (Taiwan)
Also known as Turtle Island for its uncanny resemblance to a turtle, Guishan Island is a hotspot for nature lovers.
To visit the volcanic island, you have to apply for a permit through the Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area Administration or an authorised boat operator.
The island is said to boast underwater hot springs and a diverse ecosystem, earning it a place on the Top 100 Sustainable Destinations list by Green Destinations for five consecutive years from 2016 to 2020.
A moderately steep climb of more than 1,700 steps leads hikers to the island’s highest point at 398m above sea level, known as the 401 Peak. It’s also advisable to stay on marked paths at all times.
At the top, you will be rewarded with a sweeping view of the ocean.
Guishan Island is only accessible from March to November every year.
3. Mount Batur (Indonesia)
If you are dreaming of hiking a volcanic mountain, Mount Batur in Bali is your best bet.
This stunning caldera sits at 1,717m above sea level and has nice sunrise and sunset views. There are several scenic trails leading to the peak.
It’s smaller and easier to climb than Mount Bromo (the full track) in East Java, too. Keep in mind that you have to hire a local guide before you start your adventures here.
One of the most popular treks begins at the Toya Bungkah village. The ascent takes roughly two hours to reach the crater rim, depending on your pace.
Most hikers venture out before dawn to enjoy the beautiful sun rising over the horizon.
Alternatively, you can also start your journey from the Serongga or Pasar Agung trail.
As you stand along the Batur crater, you can take in the views of Mount Agung, the highest mountain in Bali, and the tranquil Lake Batur.
You can enjoy eggs cooked in the volcanic steam vents – this experience is commonly part of the many tour packages here.
4. Mount Pinatubo (Philippines)
About three hours from Manila, Mount Pinatubo – located in Central Luzon – is a popular tourist destination.
Hikers, especially, come here to see the turquoise crater lake, a reminder of an eruption in the early 1990s.
Previously dormant for nearly six centuries, the volcano erupted in 1991 and the event transformed the landscape. It was also reported that the eruption caused temporary cooling when sulphur dioxide was released into the stratosphere.
An adventure here begins with a jeep ride through Crow Valley, a remote area of barren plains. From there, trek for about 90 minutes to get to the crater lake.
Along the journey, you may also come across plants and wildflowers.
You have to go with registered personnel to explore Mount Pinatubo. They will not only help you navigate the terrain safely but also share interesting stories about the area.

5. Arenal Volcano (Costa Rica)
Apparently, according to some travellers, there is no better way to experience Costa Rica’s wilderness than at the Arenal Volcano National Park.
Climbing the crater is prohibited, but there are several trails that wind through historical lava fields and lush rainforests, giving you a good view of the volcanic landscape.
Birders will especially enjoy the trails near the Arenal Observatory Lodge, where hummingbirds, flycatchers and honeycreepers, among many other species, can be spotted.
Most trails are easy to tackle, so first-time hikers need not worry about not being able to do this. Do note that you have to pay a small entry fee to access the park.
After a day of exploring, you can unwind in the park’s natural hot springs.
