Music and fashion are often interconnected, with one influencing the other and vice versa. This is something that Malaysian artiste Gadaffi Ismail Sabri understands very well.

The 33-year-old singer, known as Dafi, believes that the way he dresses can make an impact in his career. It helps him stand out from the crowd.

What’s your view on fashion? How do you see it playing a role in your life and career?

Fashion is a form of art that allows you to express your individuality and creativity. It is important in my everyday life as it sets me apart from other people and artistes. Fashion can boost my confidence, especially when I’m able to find the perfect combination of clothing for the right time and place.

How would you describe your personal style?

My style depends on the occasion. On an everyday basis, I’m more casual. But when I’m working, I do enjoy dressing up and don’t mind taking things up a notch or wear something that is even a lil’ crazy. I feel that it is an advantage I have for being an artiste, to be able to put on something that an everyday person may not be able to – especially on stage.

What are your top fashion tips for your fans?

Dress to express, not impress! Be yourself and wear whatever you are comfortable with. Your style may be different compared to others, but who cares because art is subjective.

Tell us about your favourite fashion designers.

My number one pick is of course my brother-in-law, Jovian Mandagie. I have always enjoyed working with him, with regards to his creativity and designs. I also look to him for fashion advice. That said, I’m big for Rizman Ruzaini and Hatta Dolmat’s work. Working with them has always been very satisfying.

What are some of your essential fashion accessories?

I believe accessories help enhance whatever look that you’re going for and makes it more interesting. When I am working, I will usually throw on a matching watch, bracelet and necklace. I have them in almost every colour in the rainbow to match whatever outfit I have on.
