Making magic happen is something that Disney has done for a very long time. From producing spellbinding animations to fleshing out fantastical worlds, the entertainment conglomerate is all about making dreams come true.

For one modestwear label in Malaysia, partnering Disney proved to be a surreal experience. The Disney x Mimpikita collection (launched last month) explores fun designs, using bright and bold prints.

They draw from Alice In Wonderland, inspired by the titular character's pursuit of her dreams and great adventure.

Nurul Zulkifli, who founded Mimpikita with her two siblings, says many Malaysians probably have a childhood of growing up under Disney's influence. She calls the cartoons true classics, and says that they are timeless.

"Growing up, when given a chance for TV time, our choice of show to watch was always anything Disney related – from Mickey Mouse to Snow White and beyond," Nurul relates.

"Watching all the shows, especially the ones featuring Disney princesses, made us love playing dress up and role play among us sisters."

Yet, how does Disney relate itself to a modestwear label? Or rather, in what way can modestwear pay tribute to Disney?

According to Nurul, modestwear is not confined to a certain ideal. The same way regular fashion can explore ideas and cultures around the world, modestwear can do it too.

"To us, there are no boundaries in terms of dressing modestly. Having longer hemlines – or wearing something sleeveless – does not mean you have to restrict your sense of fashion," she points out, about how modestwear is just like regular fashion.

"Anything is possible if you allow yourself to explore the unconventional and break boundaries just like in the world of Alice In Wonderland. Modest fashion is for everyone, it is just as stylish, full of character and positivity."

Mimpikita is a homegrown label set up by Nurul and her two sisters, Mira and Syahira in 2008.

While celebrated by Malaysians, it has also managed to garner attention internationally. In 2016, Mimpikita presented at London Fashion Week.
