With bars and restaurants in a lot of cities closed, numbers of guests at home festivities restricted (for some countries) and a generally morose ambiance, this year's holiday season promises to be rather unusual in many parts of the world.

The Covid-19 pandemic, which has shaken up our daily lives, will also affect Christmas and New Year's Eve parties and the way we usually get dressed for these festive events. Pyjamas, kimonos and slippers: this is the on-trend combo for the upcoming celebrations.

With Christmas preparations and gift shopping well underway, many women are also looking for the ideal outfit for the year's festive celebrations.

This year, however, sequined dresses and dizzyingly high heels have taken a backseat to pyjamas and slippers, set to be most popular this season, according to fashion search platform Stylight, which highlights a radical shift in web queries and sartorial purchase intentions for this end of year.

Christmas dinner or pyjama party?

The holiday season may end up looking like a giant pyjama party, during which guests compare the latest homewear trends. How's that for glamorous!

Stylight's latest figures show that clicks on Christmas pajamas increased by 52% compared to last year, while searches for party dresses fell by 77%, in comparison with the same season last year.

While some fashionistas still plan on sporting a dress, the traditional sequined models are not what shoppers have in mind (down by 83%), instead they are looking for more casual and comfortable slip dresses (+24%), invoking nightgown style. Stylight also forecasts a holiday season full of long slit skirts (+40%) with miniskirts (-44%) being eschewed.

As for outerwear, while long coats will be star pieces – since airing rooms is often recommended to help stop the spread of Covid-19 during holiday get-togethers – fashionistas are also looking for trendy and comfortable jackets this season. Silk kimonos lead the way (+31%) while blazer dresses are less popular this year (-71%).

When it comes to footwear, here again, the homewear trend seems to reign. Fur slippers are getting lots of clicks (+74%) while searches for stilettos have dipped by 42%.

The findings are based on internal Stylight data from its 12 million monthly users across the 16 markets in which it is present. – AFP Relaxnews
