Nur Izyan Mohd Amin, alongside her dedicated team at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), has undertaken a significant initiative since 2022 in developing a specialised Caregiver’s Training Module tailored for individuals grappling with Parkinson’s disease.
As a Master’s student in Physiotherapy, Izyan has immersed herself in extensive research on Parkinson’s within the rehabilitation department at UKM’s Faculty of Health Sciences.
Collaborating closely with a consortium of experts spanning various disciplines, including Neurology, Nursing, Dietetics, Speech Therapy, Psychology, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, her team aims to cultivate a robust resource: the Hidup Sejahtera dengan Parkinson handbook.
In describing their endeavour, Izyan articulates: “We have been working with neurologists, nurses, dieticians and many other experts, who have all helped by contributing their expertise to this module.”
With meticulous attention to detail, their objective is to compile a user-friendly compendium, equipping caregivers with the essential tools to assume the role of a “personal therapist” for their loved ones within the comfort of their homes.
Beyond practical guidance, the handbook aims to elucidate the trajectory of the disease, enabling caregivers to anticipate and prepare for future challenges. Embracing the title Hidup Sejahtera dengan Parkinson, which translates to “Living Well with Parkinson’s”, the handbook aspires to serve as a comprehensive yet accessible guidebook, encompassing a spectrum of insights crucial for the care and management of individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Izyan actively engages in volunteerism with the Malaysian Parkinson’s Disease Association, lending her expertise during association events.
The association frequently extends invitations to experts and students from UKM to deliver talks focusing on Parkinson’s disease rehabilitation and physiotherapy, thereby fostering a collaborative approach towards addressing the multifaceted aspects of Parkinson’s care and support.
