August is always an extra busy month for Awang Akub Mohd Amir. Every year, the retiree decorates his house in Kampung Lok Kawi Baru in Putatan, Sabah, with hundreds of Jalur Gemilang, as well as the state flag, to express his patriotic spirit and love for the country.

A former civil servant, Awang Akub said he has been doing this every year as a build up to the country's National Day celebrations.
