Starchild: Malaysian children simply love their burgers

Chloe Leong Xizhen, 8

People love to eat burgers because they are tasty and easy to prepare. Burger patties can be prepared on a grill or in the oven.

Burgers have come a long way since they were first introduced in the late 19th century.

These days, apart from fast-food burgers, there are numerous gourmet burgers that use premium meats or non-traditional garnishes and sauces. Instead of sesame burger buns, we now have black charcoal buns or even portobello mushroom “buns”.

While popular burgers include cheese burger, fish burger and beef burger, you can modify your burger according to your preference. You can add mangoes (yes, really), ham and onion rings or even tom yum paste for a different flavour.

Here’s what Starchild readers had to say on the topic, Burgers.

“My burger is called Nutritious Fruity Chocolatey Burger (The NFC Burger). I named the burger NFC because it is packed with nutrients, fruits, and chocolates,” writes Esther Ling Sze Rong, seven.

Six-year-old Adelyn Hui-Ling Yeo would call her dream burger, The Magician’s Burger. “I believe in magic and miracles. The burger would contain a chicken burger patty marinaded with ‘magical’ sauces and toppings.”

“I love fish burgers because my favourite food is fish. Sometimes when I eat the fish, it is crunchy and yummy,” writes Chloe Leong Xizhen, eight.

Jodie Tan Li Juen, 12, writes, “I like to eat fish burgers the most. My father grills burgers for us. He places the patties in the hot skillet. He uses a spatula to remove the patties, and immediately places them onto toasted buns. I will help out with the toppings like grilled onions, lettuce, and grilled mushrooms.”

Jayden Tan Li Sheng, eight, writes, “I like to eat all types of burgers with cheese. My favourite toppings are cheddar cheese, lettuce and bacon. Sometimes, I will put extra thick Caesar salad dressing in it, which has ingredients like lemon juice, mustard, and mayonnaise. I like to eat a burger with French fries. Yummy!”

Six-year-old Bethany Wang Qi Syuen enjoys hamburgers and buns. “Mummy makes them at home for a quick and delicious meal. A simple bun with meat patty, tomato sauce and egg with some cucumber slices on the side is how it is.”

ITEM: Sushi is a traditional Japanese roll prepared with rice and accompanied with ingredients like seafood and vegetables. Many children enjoy sushi because it is delicious. But sushi also contains a good mix of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and protein. In conjunction with International Sushi Day on June 18, Starchild wants to know more about the type (or types) of sushi that you fancy.

Don’t forget to send us a drawing as well.
