Hong Kong was hit by its deadliest blaze in decades on Wednesday (Nov 26) when a massive fire swept through several high-rise buildings in a housing complex in Tai Po district.

At press time, at least 55 people have been confirmed dead, with hundreds more still missing.

Among those impacted by the tragedy was former TVB actress Lisa-Marie Tse's grandmother.

In an Instagram Story, Tse – who's of mixed Chinese and Scottish heritage – shared a video capturing the fire as it raged through the buildings.

"I spent the day watching my grandmother's home burning right in front of my eyes. Such a devastating day," the 30-year-old wrote.

Tse, who won the Miss Hong Kong pageant in 2020, also extended her thoughts and prayers to those who lost their lives, were injured and had their homes destroyed.

Many Hong Kong celebrities have voiced their condolences to the victims.

Actor and television host Bob Lam described the tragedy as heartbreaking and prayed for the safety of those affected.

"May the deceased rest in peace, may the injured recover soon, may everyone be safe, and may there be no more casualties," he wrote.

Singer-songwriter Sam Hui, who lives within the Tai Po district, said he empathised with the victims and called for all sectors to assist the fire services department’s rescue efforts.

Singer-actress Jace Chan expressed her sorrow over the tragedy and announced that her concert ticket sales, originally scheduled for Friday, have been postponed until further notice out of respect.

"I'm deeply saddened by the fire in Tai Po district. It's not appropriate to sell tickets during this time," she said.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong broadcaster ATV –  based in Tai Po district – said it would open its second and fourth floors as shelters for victims of the disaster.

It's estimated to accommodate up to 200 people.
