Former Hong Kong actor Liu Wai-hung, fondly known as Ah Chan, has found remarkable success in organic farming since stepping away from showbiz in the 1990s.
Today, the 67-year-old cultivates his own produce in Guangdong and is the proud founder of Ya Can Mi, a well-loved rice brand in China.
However, it seems Liu’s luck has taken a turn, as he recently revealed on YouTube that his crops were severely damaged by a super typhoon that hit in June.
“I believe everyone has heard of the saying, ‘It never rains but it pours’. The entire rice field has turned into a pond. There’s nothing left,” he said.
To make matters worse, the farm suffered another heavy blow the following month when it was struck by flash floods.
The former TVB star shared a recording of the incident, showing torrential rain pouring down relentlessly like a waterfall, causing extensive damage to his farm.
Despite the setbacks, Liu remains optimistic.
He shared that earlier this year, he had already expected to lose half of his harvest to pest infestation. Since his organic farm avoids the use of pesticides, such losses were nothing new.
However, the heavy rain, which submerged a large part of his rice field for some 14 hours, unexpectedly drove away the pests that had been plaguing his crops.
“In this world, there are gains and losses. Don’t let some troubles weigh you down. As long as you face the problems and find solutions, there will always be a brighter tomorrow,” he said.
For the record, Liu shares a son with a Malaysian-born woman.
In 2022, he and his organic farming team earned the title “Doctor Durian” after saving hundreds of dying durian trees at a farm in Seremban, Negri Sembilan.
