Taiwanese star Vivian Hsu turned 50 on March 19. Her birthday wish? More time.

The singer-actress, who underwent treatment for thyroid cancer in 2024, posted pictures of her milestone birthday celebration with friends and her nine-year-old son in Taipei on Instagram on March 20.

She wrote: “There’s so much left to do on my life’s checklist. If wishes do come true, I wish for peace, safety and health. I hope that I can be given more time, and that all of us will always have our inner child with us, so we can be brave and fearless.”

Hsu revealed in November 2024 that she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the beginning of that year during a routine health check-up, and had undergone surgery to treat the condition. She could not sing for two to three months after the procedure, but added that she felt fine after recovering.

The star of films such as Little Big Women (2020) and Mama Boy (2022) posted photos of her celebration, which included a meal with her son and friends in Taipei, with her famous pals like actress-producer Ruby Lin and singers Princess Ai and Julia Peng present.

She also visited Taipei Children’s Amusement Park, which has free entry on Wednesdays for registered residents of Taipei. She entered the park without having to buy a ticket, which she called a “small, pleasant surprise”.

The single mother – who divorced Singapore-based businessman Sean Lee in 2023 – added that her son spent 1½ hours making a pop-up birthday card with a drawing of a tiered cake for her. He also made a candle, which doubled as her birthday cake candle.

Hsu shuttles between Taiwan for work and Singapore, where she lives with her only child.

She wrote: “25+25 years – there are too many people to thank, words are not enough. I am, as per usual, living and working seriously. The mundane is the most romantic.

“Entering a children’s theme park for free is romantic, riding a roller coaster I’m so afraid of with my son is romantic; having my family around me on the anniversary of my mother’s labour is romantic; a handmade card is romantic; my son making me a birthday candle is romantic; being surrounded by all my girlfriends is romantic. Onward to the next 25 years.” – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
