American pop star Britney Spears received the best gift over the Christmas season.

The 43-year-old reunited with her 18-year-old son Jayden James Federline after two years away from him. In an Instagram post on Dec 26, she uploaded a video made up of two clips of the pair together.

In one clip, Jayden says hello to the camera while Spears says, “This is my baby”, before planting a big kiss on the teen’s cheek.

In another clip, they are in front of a Christmas tree and wishing everyone a merry Christmas.

Spears wrote in the caption accompanying the post: “Best Christmas of my life. I haven’t seen my boys in two years. Tears of joy and literally in shock everyday koo koo (cuckoo) crazy, so in love and blessed. I’m speechless, thank you Jesus.”

Though the singer mentions her “boys”, her older son Sean Preston Federline, 19, is not seen in the clips. Sean and Jayden are Spears’ only children, from her marriage to American dancer Kevin Federline, whom she split from in 2006.

After the divorce was finalised in 2007, the couple had various custody arrangements, but her sons were largely under the care of Federline, 46. According to American entertainment outlet People, Federline and their two sons moved to Hawaii in 2023, with Spears’ consent, and that Jayden reunited with Spears in Los Angeles in November 2024.

The reunion comes two years after tensions ran high between mother and son.

Spears was placed under a conservatorship from 2008 to 2021 by her father, marking a 13-year period in which she was stripped of legal rights to make her own financial and career decisions. She successfully filed to end her conservatorship in 2021, which she called “abusive”.

In a 2022 interview, Jayden defended his maternal grandparents and said they were “not bad people”.

According to American news outlet USA Today, Spears then made a now-deleted Instagram post where she addressed Jayden’s words directly and said: “If you can honestly sit back and say with your sensible brilliant mind what memaw and paw paw (slang for grandmother and grandfather) did to me was fine and call them not bad people... then yes I have failed as a mother.”

Spears married American model-fitness trainer Sam Asghari, 30, in 2022, after she reportedly suffered a miscarriage while pregnant with their first child. The couple divorced in 2024. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
