Taiwanese pop sensation Jay Chou took to Instagram a week ago to share a 24-second teaser for a song he had been previously working on.
Many fans of the K-pop group Infinite soon began noticing similarities between the melody of Chou’s unreleased song and the prelude of the group’s popular 2011 track Julia. It wasn’t long before netizens started accusing Chou of stealing the chords.
Chou cleared the air about the accusations in a recent interview with Apple Daily. He made the comparison of his clip with three of his other songs Sunny Day, Her Eyelashes and Common Jasmine Orange which were all released back in 2003 to 2004.
“The chord progression is the same,” he explained. “If the arrangement of the instruments are the same, it would sound similar.”
He went on to emphasise that most chord progressions of pop music generally sound the same, with the verses differing.
Chou, who turned 42 this year, continued by saying he had been using these chords for a long time with the main point being how these chords were used to create new melodies.
He then jokingly said: “Should I list a bunch for everyone to see?”
The artiste admitted that he came across many of the negative comments on his post but had chosen to ignore them. He said this particular interview was a chance to teach everyone a lesson on music.
