Taiwanese director Doze Niu sentenced to 4 years in prison for sexual assault

Looks like Doze Niu won't be making movies any time soon. He has been sentenced to four years in prison for sexual assault, CNA Taiwan reported.

According to reports, Niu, 53, had assaulted one of his female staff members – identified only as A – after she attended a gathering held at his house in 2018.

Niu, known for directing several Taiwanese blockbusters such as Monga (2010) and Love (2012), continues to deny the allegations, claiming that he “made a mistake but didn't commit a crime".

He also claims that he was attracted to the other party romantically and was under the impression that "A" was aware of his intentions.

However, results from the examination of DNA evidence corroborates with the victim’s claims of sexual assault. In addition, the prosecution argued that Niu abused his authority as director to force his advances upon "A", who was his direct subordinate.

Niu’s lawyer said that the director intends to appeal the sentence.
