The Malaysian dance community had the rare privilege of presenting their talents to renowned choreographer Lia Kim during the recent K-Dance Festival in Kuala Lumpur.
The two-day event (on Dec 6 and 7), co-organised by the Embassy of the Republic Of Korea and Malaysia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, was held at a hotel and international school respectively.
This collaboration highlighted the shared appreciation for urban dance, specifically K-dance – a subgenre of urban dance that incorporates elements such as hip hop, locking, popping and more – and strengthened the cultural ties between Korea and Malaysia.
During the event, attendees - from various skill sets - received insights and lessons from professionals at the 1Million Dance Studio in Seoul – including Lia Kim, Back Koo-young, Crowe and Hyewon.
The choreography lessons were easy to understand, with the moves from Power by G Dragon adding fun to a session.
"Instead of learning the moves, learn to groove to the beat, just have fun with the music," said Lia Kim, one of the pioneers of K-dance, which will continue to grow in the coming years.
"Get the basics and foundations right first, its the most important part," added Back.
The classes also featured a small dance cypher session where dancers formed a circle, with those confident enough given the chance to show off their skills.
Founded by Kim in 2014, the studio has coached many popular K-pop groups, including 2NE1, Girls’ Generation, Twice, The Boyz and Seventeen.
"So far, the best dancers are Twice's Momo, Lisa and Taemin," revealed Kim.
"A shout-out to Shinee, too," said Back.
