Buffet at Petaling Jaya hotel offers ‘gulai kawah’, dishes inspired by Ramadan bazaars
FEW dishes carry a sense of occasion like gulai kawah.
Cooked in massive woks, it is a communal and culinary tradition here. It also appeals to those seeking something nourishing after a day of fasting.
Hence, One World Hotel in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya beckons with the “Selera Klasik, Jiwa Moden” buffet till March 20 at Cinnamon Coffee House.
Chef de Cuisine Zahid Zainol Rashid said the spread is inspired by Ramadan bazaars.
“For this menu, we preserve familiar flavours while refining them with modern techniques,” he said.
Bold and fragrant, Gulai Tempoyak Ikan Patin marries fermented durian with spice.

The fish soaks up the tangy, slightly pungent gravy without overwhelming the palate.
The Asam Pedas Daging is tender and tasty while the slow-cooked Gulai Daging Tetel is gelatinous in its coconut-enriched, spice-laden gravy.
Creamy yet light, Siput Sedut Masak Lemak balances coconut sweetness with subtle aromatics.
And the Betis Kambing Masak Varuval is tender and spicy, while the Kari Kepala Ikan is thick and fragrant.
All these gulai go well with the Nasi Briyani Gam.
From the slow-cooked gulai, the spread pivots to spice-forward fried favourites.
The Ayam Goreng Berempah is crispy and aromatic, while the Puyuh Goreng Berempah is juicy and best enjoyed hot.

Seafood fans will enjoy the Udang Galah Goreng Berempah with a light crust.
The journey continues with mamak-style mains.
The rich Prawn Curry Mamak Style comes with plump prawns while the Ikan Tenggiri Goreng Berempah is encased in a fragrant crust.
The slow-cooked Lamb Shoulder Mamak Curry is fork-tender in its aromatic curry while the lightly caramelised Ayam Madu Mamak is a crowd-pleaser with its subtle spice.
Other mains include Ayam Bawang Kicap, Ikan Sembilang Berlado, Pucuk Ubi Masak Lemak, Kambing Masak Kurma and Ayam Masak Merah.
The dessert spread leans on local favourites.
Pisang goreng delivers simple comfort while the made-to-order Air Batu Campur (ABC) comes with colourful toppings.

The irresistibly indulgent Tempura Durian is creamy and crispy at the same time, while the Serawa Durian is rich and best savoured slowly.
Traditional sweet and savoury kuih round off the feast.
There are the timeless classics like Batang Buruk, Kuih Kapit, Tart Nenas, Kuih Bangkit and Kuih Bakar.
Soft, aromatic Kuih Ketayap, colourful Kuih Lapis and savoury Kuih Cara Berlauk and Popiah Sambal complete the selection.
