A CROSS between a butter biscuit and a shortcake, the classic Abernethy biscuits were named after English surgeon John Abernethy who invented it in 1829 to support digestion.
He believed that most diseases were caused by digestive disorders and adapted the military hardtack biscuits recipe to include sugar for energy and caraway seeds, believed to prevent flatulence.
