NOTHING beats the charm of savouring afternoon tea in a restaurant established by a renowned chef and which prides itself on offering a taste of British food culture.

Gordon Ramsay Bar and Grill at Sunway Resort Hotel is presenting a new afternoon tea menu, enhanced with a tea trolley experience where fine teas are served tableside.

The restaurant’s take on the timeless English tradition is presented in a three-tier tray, which includes three of its signature dishes in bite sizes.

The signature items are Ramsay’s iconic Beef Wellington, Manjari 64% Chocolate Tart and Yuzu Mille-Feuille.

The tart made from 64% dark chocolate is not overpoweringly sweet while the mille-feuille with puff pastry layered with pastry cream is light and airy.

Besides the Beef Wellington, other savoury items include Boston Lobster Roll, Beetroot Cured Salmon with Creme Fraiche and Avocado as well as Coronation Chicken with Coriander Cress.

The platter of sweet treats comprises Orange Blossom Mousse, Apple Crumble Creme Diplomat, and Raspberry Macaron.

Afternoon tea is incomplete without scones. The restaurant’s basket of scones come in plain and with raisins, and are served with Devon clotted cream and strawberry preserve.

Gordon Ramsay Bar and Grill general manager Albert Kjerimov said that in sticking to the afternoon tea tradition, both the clotted cream and strawberry preserve are made in-house.

Diners can complete the indulgent experience with their choice of free-flow tea or coffee.

Tea lovers can select their preferred tea and accompaniments from the tea trolley.

The trolley offers 12 types from British brand, Newby Teas. They include black, oolong, green, tisanes (herbal) and premium teas.

Restaurant supervisor Ahmad Zulhilmi Zahari said those with a preference for strong tea should opt for Darjeeling which has hints of roasted charcoal, or ginseng oolong for its earthy, slightly bitter taste.

“For dark teas, I recommend the High Mountain tea as it is light and refreshing while Royal Zafrani is spiced with saffron.

“For non-dark teas, tisanes, lavender, chamomile or lemongrass are ideal. Lavender tea has a floral taste while chamomile and lemongrass are herbal, non-caffeinated options.”

The trolley also offers a selection of honey and fresh herbs to accompany each cup of tea.

Ahmad Zulhilmi suggested pairing royal honey with dark tea, Melaleuca honey with green tea and jungle honey with tisane.

“Depending on the day, the fresh herbs available include rosemary, sage, peppermint or thyme.

“I recommend that the tea be enjoyed on its own for the first round, then enhanced with herbs for the second round,” he said.

Kjerimov said the afternoon tea set was unique as it showcased a selection of signature dishes in bite-sized portions, while featuring items not on the menu.

“For example, the apple crumble, orange mousse and macaron are items unique to the afternoon tea set,” he said.

“For customers with specific dietary restrictions, they may opt to supplement an item for another that is present in the set.

“For example, if they can’t have the lobster roll, they may request to substitute it with any of the sandwiches, Beef Wellington or sweet pastries.”

Kjerimov added that the restaurant is mulling the idea of serving a vegetarian version of its afternoon tea set.

The afternoon tea experience is priced at RM169++ for two persons and RM299++ for four persons.

It is available Mondays to Fridays, from 3pm to 6pm.
