Peranakan-inspired tea house opens in KL’s Chinatown

Afternoon tea served on Peranakan porcelain at Lady Yi’s Tea House.

BOUTIQUE-style hotel Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur has launched its third food and beverage establishment.

Adjacent to the hotel lobby on Level 7 is an intimate and serene hideaway from Kuala Lumpur’s hustle and bustle, with sweeping views across the Chinatown neighbourhood.

Floor-to-ceiling windows stream natural light, a contrast to the intricate dark wood panels and bold colours of the patterned tiles, plush furnishings and a framed phoenix painting.

Lady Yi’s Tea House has that rare thing: a sense of place.

Going beyond the confines of serving tea, it is an invitation to explore the rich Peranakan culture through a selection of curated teas and fine Peranakan-inspired delicacies.

Desirous of leaving a legacy for the next generation, Masteron Group of Companies executive director and Federal International Holdings chief executive officer Datuk Choy Wai Hin had a vision to integrate Malaysian-Chinese culture into an internationally branded hotel.

Named after his eldest daughter Yuin Yi, Lady Yi’s Tea House is a tribute to the memories and conversations she had over afternoon tea with her grandmother and their shared love for kuih.

“Onde-onde with extra gula melaka, otak-otak slightly charred and kaya with extra coconut and pandan, that’s how we liked them,” reminisces Yuin Yi, who worked closely with executive chef Gerald Chong to curate a contemporary Peranakan Afternoon Tea menu rich in Nyonya flavors.

Experience the Peranakan Affair Afternoon Tea at RM98+ served on Peranakan porcelain, hand-picked by Yuin Yi to highlight the history of Straits Chinese homeware.
