MSC quarterly bottom line surges on higher tin prices

The tin miner and metal producer’s net profit surged 144.6% year-on-year to RM34mil in 2Q26 from RM13.9mil previously.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Smelting Corp Bhd’s (MSC) net profit more than doubled in the second quarter ended June 30, 2026 (2Q26) bolstered by higher tin prices and increased production.

The tin miner and metal producer’s net profit surged 144.6% year-on-year (y-o-y) to RM34mil in 2Q26 from RM13.9mil previously.

It recorded a revenue of RM637.3mil, a 68.2% increase y-o-y from RM379mil in the corresponding quarter last year.

The group attributed the stronger performance to a 44.7% increase in refined tin sales volume and a 49.1% rise in average tin prices to RM208,400 per tonne in 2Q26 from RM139,800 per tonne previously.

The tin mining segment remained the group’s largest profit contributor, supported by higher production volumes and stronger tin prices.

The tin smelting segment turned around from a RM9.6mil loss in 2Q25 to a RM3.8mil profit in the current quarter, driven by higher profit from the sale and encashment of tin intermediates, among others.

For the first half, MSC’s net profit surged 255.1% to RM77mil from RM21.7mil a year earlier, while revenue rose to RM1.1bil from RM748.7mil.
