Final body recorded from Pakistan's broad peak after deadly avalanche

ISLAMABAD: (Bernama-dpa) The last body from an expedition that killed 10 climbers on Pakistan's Broad Peak was recovered on Friday (Aug 21), three weeks after they were swept away by an avalanche in one of the deadliest mountaineering accidents in decades, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

The body of a female United States (US) climber was brought down to base camp and arrangements were being made for further transportation, said Ayaz Shigri from the Alpine Club of Pakistan, a body that oversees mountaineering.

The avalanche on the 8,047-metre-high Broad Peak hit the expedition led by renowned Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja on July 30.

Six men from Nepal, one US woman, a female Omani mountaineer, a Chinese national, and a Pakistani were part of the expedition.

Broad Peak in northern Pakistan is one of the tallest mountains in the world. Hundreds of climbers attempt to summit it every year along with K2, the world’s second-highest peak, which is in the same region.

Purja, popularly known as Nims, became renowned worldwide for climbing all peaks over 8,000 metres in a record short span.

Mountaineering accidents are common on Pakistani peak, and the frequency is increasing due to the climate change, according to climbing experts.
