Bangladesh trade deficit widens to over US$19bil in 3Q of FY2025-26

DHAKA: Bangladesh's trade deficit in the first three quarters of the current fiscal year 2025-26 (July 2025-June 2026) ballooned over 24 per cent year on year to US$19.17 billion, according to the latest data released by the Bangladesh Bank.

The central bank data showed that the country's import payment was US$51.56 billion, up 4.6 per cent in the cited period, while earnings from exports stood at US$32.38 billion, down 4.4 per cent, during the same period.

Central bank officials said strong remittances from nearly 10 million Bangladeshis living and working abroad helped offset the impact of the trade shortfall.

According to the central bank's data, remittances increased more than 20 per cent year on year to US$26.21 billion in the July-March period of the current fiscal year.

Bangladesh's trade deficit in the 2024-25 fiscal year from July 2024 to June 2025 dipped by more than nine per cent to over US$20 billion year on year. - Xinhua
