JAKARTA: (Bernama) Indonesian authorities have arrested a Chinese national wanted by Interpol Beijing over his alleged involvement in an international online scam syndicate, shortly after his arrival at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Indonesia's National Central Bureau (NCB)-Interpol Secretary Brig Gen Untung Widyatmoko said Zheng Rongjing was apprehended in the early hours of Thursday following a request from NCB-Interpol Beijing, which had sought Indonesia's assistance in locating and arresting the suspect on March 5.

"To support efforts to combat online fraud linked to international organised crime syndicates, we arrested an Interpol Notice subject at the request of NCB-Interpol Beijing, namely Zheng Rongjing,” he said, according to Antara News Agency, on Friday (June 26).

Untung said Zheng, who is on Interpol Beijing's most wanted list, is suspected of being a key player in an international online scam network operating from one of the largest scam compounds in Cambodia.

He said investigators are looking into Zheng's purpose for travelling to Indonesia before he is handed over to the Chinese authorities through the formal mechanism. - Bernama
