BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Several landmarks in the Sultanate will be illuminated in purple in celebration of International Women’s Day 2026, observed annually on March 8.

According to the Community Development Department under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the locations include the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge, the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas and the Brunei Energy Hub Dermaga Diraja Building.

The illumination will take place from Saturday (March 7) at 7pm until Sunday evening.

The initiative not only aims to commemorate the contributions and achievements of women in various fields but also serves as a symbol of support for efforts to empower women’s roles in society.

Purple was chosen as the official theme colour for International Women’s Day, in line with international practice.

The colour symbolises justice, dignity, and solidarity in advocating for women’s rights and interests.

The illumination of purple lights also reflects Brunei’s support for initiatives led by the United Nations to empower women worldwide.

As a gesture of support and participation in this campaign, the public is encouraged to capture photographs of the illuminated landmarks and share them on social media using the hashtags #HWA2026 or #IWD2026.

This initiative not only raises awareness of the importance of gender equality but also fosters appreciation and recognition of women’s achievements across various aspects of life. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
