Myanmar rep asks Yangon Region Hluttaw for full access to electricity in Yangon Region

YANGON: A representative from Kyauktada Township Region Hluttaw has asked the Yangon Region Hluttaw about the need for full access to electricity in Yangon Region.

The above question was asked by Kyauktada Township Representative No. (1) U Thein Naing during the fifth day of the second regular session of the third Yangon Region Hluttaw held on Friday (June 19).

"Is there any plan to implement short-term/long-term projects to ensure sufficient electricity supply in Yangon Region during the summer and long-term periods?

"Rather than increasing the use of hydropower and natural gas in the country, there are many vacant lands in Yangon Region.

"Is there any plan to immediately implement solar energy systems, wind energy systems (Win Energy), and waste to energy generation using waste generated daily in Yangon.?

"Is there any plan to upgrade power substations and power lines to improve the power distribution system, ensure stable voltage, and reduce power losses?

"If there are plans, I would like to know in which fiscal year the project will be implemented," said U Thein Naing, representative number (1) of Kyauktada Township, in a question.

The parliamentarian said that Yangon Region is the economic hub of Myanmar, has the most densely populated population, and is home to the largest number of industrial zones. It also consumes nearly half of the country's electricity.

However, the irregular supply of electricity, especially during the summer months and some periods, is causing a significant impact on the socio-economic life, education, health, and production of the people living in the region.

In addition, it is also a barrier to foreign investment.

The development of a country depends largely on the availability of electricity. Due to irregular electricity supply, generators are used during blackouts and fuel oil is used, resulting in unnecessary foreign exchange losses.

As a result, the price of manufactured goods has increased, which has directly affected the public, the parliamentarian said.

He continued, "Therefore, what short-term/long-term strategic plans will be put in place to close the gap between electricity demand and production capacity in the Yangon Region during the summer months, which are always experienced every year?

"During critical periods, LNG ships dock and refuel to provide electricity, which is not a permanent solution, but a temporary solution, and the costs will be higher.

"It is known that the installation of a gas turbine in the Thilawa Industrial Zone in the Southern District has provided stable electricity for the southern industrial zone.

"In other districts where industrial zones are located, such as the Northern and Eastern Districts, by installing such gas turbines, it will not be necessary to distribute electricity from the main power grid to the industrial zones, but will be able to distribute it to more residential areas.

"I would like to recommend that power substations and backup power grids be upgraded to ensure stable power supply to industrial zones and businesses.

"Yangon Region relies on hydroelectric power generation, natural gas, and coal plants, and since the power is transmitted from many miles away, there have been power losses from the main power grid and vandalism by people with different views, which has led to the collapse of main power poles and power outages," said Kyauktada Township Representative No. (1). U Thein Naing said when asked a question.
