Brunei forest park revamp underway to boost ecotourism

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Berakas Forest Recreation Park will be temporarily closed to the public from Thursday (Jan 1) to facilitate an ecotourism redevelopment project under a 20-year agreement between the Forestry Department under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) and Borneo Eco-Resort Sdn Bhd.

According to the Forestry Department, the strategic initiative aims to develop, operate and maintain modern and sustainable ecotourism infrastructure while ensuring the conservation of the park’s natural environment.

The redevelopment will focus on enhancing the visitor experience, strengthening eco-friendly facilities and reinforcing the park’s appeal as a nature tourism destination.

The project is expected to create employment opportunities, boost small and medium-sized enterprises, and support the development of conservation-based tourism.

To mark the temporary closure and as a symbol of joint commitment to environmental conservation, the MPRT, together with Borneo Eco-Resort Sdn Bhd, held a beach clean-up campaign at Berakas Forest Recreation Park.

The initiative brought together staff and strategic partners to support coastal conservation efforts and raise awareness of the importance of environmental protection.

The handover of site keys and the installation of temporary closure signage were also carried out by the Forestry Department and Borneo Eco-Resort.

The temporary closure signage was handed over by Acting Director of the Forestry Department Reni Yahya to Eco Borneo Sdn Bhd Manager Datuk Jack Ting, and witnessed by Permanent Secretary at the MPRT Tutiaty Abdul Wahab, Deputy Permanent Secretary II at the MPRT Noralinda Ibrahim and Deputy Permanent Secretary I at the MPRT Mohd Yusree Junaidi. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
