Last 15 hikers rescued from China's Qomolangma snowstorm

BEIJING: The last group of 15 hikers affected by a snowstorm on the eastern slopes of Qomolangma, also known as Mount Everest, in Dingri county of the Xizang autonomous region, safely reached the Choedang township reception point by 7pm on Wednesday (Oct 8), local authorities confirmed.

On Saturday, a sudden snowstorm struck a campsite on the eastern slopes of Qomolangma, leaving hundreds of trekkers, local guides, and porters stranded.

In response to the situation, the local government acted promptly, organising more than 900 personnel for rescue tasks, including police, immigration officers, firefighters, medical staff, local officials, and community members.

Over 140 vehicles, including buses for transport, and about 200 horses and yaks, were assembled to perform the rescue.

Additionally, food, medicine, heating and oxygen equipment, and warm clothing were mobilized to ensure timely rescue operations, personnel reception, material transport, and service support. - China Daily/ANN
