YANGON: A farm worker in Mon State’s Thanbyuzayat Township was severely injured after stepping on a landmine in Wae Khami village, according to local sources.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of March 7, when 43-year-old U Nanda Htun, a resident of Wae Khami village, was clearing weeds in a rubber plantation near the village. He accidentally stepped on a buried landmine, triggering an explosion.
As a result of the blast, U Nanda Htun suffered a severe injury, losing his left foot, while his right leg sustained shrapnel wounds. Additionally, he sustained injuries on his left forearm and beneath his left elbow, a local resident reported.
"When the explosion happened, other plantation workers nearby heard the blast and rushed to the scene. They found U Nanda Htun lying on the ground with severe injuries to his legs. They carried him back to the village and transported him to Thanbyuzayat Township Public Hospital by car," the resident said.
Due to the severity of his injuries, U Nanda Htun was later transferred to Mawlamyine General Hospital by ambulance for further medical treatment, the local source added.
Landmine explosions have been frequently reported in Thanbyuzayat Township. Last year, several incidents involving local residents stepping on buried landmines were recorded.
On January 9 of this year, a couple from Myankone village, Kyaikmayaw Township, also fell victim to a landmine explosion. The husband was killed, while his wife sustained severe injuries. - Eleven Media/ANN
