Three Ethiopians arrested in Myanmar telecom fraud crackdown

YANGON: Myanmar authorities said three Ethiopian nationals were arrested during ongoing investigations into online scam operations near Myawady in Kayin State.

The government said the suspects had entered Myanmar illegally through neighboring countries, including Thailand, before reaching scam compounds around Myawady. Officials are currently verifying their identities and preparing for deportation.

Authorities added that Myanmar has been cooperating with neighbouring countries and international organisations to crack down on online scam centres, illegal gambling operations and human trafficking networks.

Between Jan. 30, 2025 and May 16, 2026, officials detained 14,657 foreign nationals who had entered the Myawady area illegally. Of those, 13,422 have already been deported through Thailand to their respective countries.

The remaining 1,235 foreigners are still being processed, including 766 facing legal action under immigration and drug-related laws.

Authorities said 469 others are ready for repatriation and are being held under supervision pending transfer arrangements. - Eleven Media/ANN
