Indonesia halts works at Special Economic Zone with Trump golf course

JAKARTA (Bloomberg): The Indonesian government has halted construction works in a special economic zone that hosts a Donald Trump-branded luxury golf course due to environmental violations.

All construction activities in the Lido SEZ in West Java province have been put on hold and sealed by the Environment Ministry after it found indications of improperly managed rainwater runoff in the area by developer PT MNC Land, according to a statement on Thursday. It has resulted in "sedimentation and shallowing,” the statement said.

The Lido SEZ is located some 60 kilometers away from capital Jakarta and is often touted as a world-class integrated tourist destination by MNC Land, part of a conglomerate founded by Hary Tanoesoedibjo.

MNC Land has built infrastructure to address the sedimentation and shallowing, which had occurred before it took over the area in 2013, the company said in a statement published in news outlet Kompas. The firm also said it hadn’t received a notification from the ministry on the matter as of Thursday.

The businesses of Tanoesoedibjo’s conglomerate span from real estate, finance to media. He launched the sale of luxury condos in partnership with the Trump Organization in 2019 that also marked the US developer’s foray into Southeast Asia’s biggest economy.

The 18-hole golf course opened in July last year following several years of delay caused by the pandemic.
