Hong Kong eyes bigger role, market as it helps Hainan with free-trade port development

Hong Kong is helping Hainan’s development as the largest free-trade port in China, as the city looks for new channels to expand its manufacturing and services capacity and reach out to a larger market during the pandemic.

On the east coast of Haikou, the capital of China’s southernmost Hainan province, a Hainan-Hong Kong Cooperation Pilot Zone is under construction. The area of 1 square kilometre will be built into a commercial and residential compound for Hong Kong-based companies. A jewellery and diamond processing industrial project will also be incorporated in this zone, aiming to deepen the bilateral cooperation in jewellery design, production and related supply chain.
