The Road to Mandalay began life as a cruiser in Germany and made her maiden voyage in 1964. Built to very high standards, the ship was purchased by Orient-Express Hotels, Trains and Cruises in 1994 following a period as a floating hotel in Dresden.
Major refurbishments were carried out — the number of cabins reduced and elegant Burmese decorations installed. In addition, a state-of-the-art sewage system was put in place to preserve the purity of the Ayeyarwaddy River.
