China turns to AI as jobseeker numbers top Belgium’s population

China will harness artificial intelligence to create jobs as the number of university graduates poised to enter the labor market this year will reach 12.7 million – more than the population of countries such as Belgium.

The government will use AI to upgrade traditional roles, tap employment opportunities across multiple channels and help young people showcase their skills in various industries, Human Resources and Social Security Minister Wang Xiaoping said at a press conference during the annual session of the National People’s Congress.

While cautioning that growing uncertainties and unpredictable factors are creating new challenges for employment stability, she said China will roll out large-scale internships and training programs as part of effort to address these pressures.

Emphasis will be on vocational skills development in emerging sectors such as the low-altitude economy, new-energy vehicles, and artificial intelligence, Wang said.
