WhatsApp is rolling out a Chat Lock feature to let Android and iPhone users protect their conversations from prying eyes.

Once a chat has been locked, it can only be opened via the device’s authentication method, including phone passcode or biometrics like fingerprint and facial recognition.

The chats will also be kept in a separate Locked Chats folder.

According to the company’s FAQ, notifications from chats that are locked will not display contact information or content. Any media that’s received will also not be saved to the phone's photo gallery.

To turn on Chat Lock, select a chat, then view Chat Info (tap the top bar with the person’s name) and select Chat Lock. — WhatsAppTo turn on Chat Lock, select a chat, then view Chat Info (tap the top bar with the person’s name) and select Chat Lock. — WhatsApp

However, the feature will not hide calls from a person whose chat is locked.

Also, the chat lock will not be applied to other devices linked to the WhatsApp account, such as laptops or desktops.

To turn on Chat Lock, select a chat, then view Chat Info (tap the top bar with the person’s name) and select Chat Lock, which should be listed under Disappearing Messages.

However, do note that the feature is being rolled out in stages and you may not have it yet.

"We think this feature will be great for people who have reason to share their phones from time to time with a family member or those moments where someone else is holding your phone at the exact moment an extra special chat arrives," the company said in a blog post announcing the feature.

The company said it will be adding more features to Chat Lock, such as locking companion devices and creating custom passwords for chats.
