PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating customer complaints that Telekom Malaysia had lowered the speed of its 500Mbps Unifi plan.

According to the complaints, TM had lowered the upload speed of the 500Mbps (megabits per second) plan, introduced last month, from 200Mbps to 100Mbps

Customers spotted TM had made the change on Sept 2.

The regulatory body said the issue was highlighted by online news portals which claimed customers could have been duped by the original advertisement with the higher speed.

TM, in a statement to LifestyleTech on Sept 18, claimed the error was due to a misprint in its marketing material and “no change to the upload speed configuration” was made.

MCMC said it will not hesitate to take action against TM if its initial investigation revealed there were elements that infringed consumer rights.

The Communication and Multimedia Act 1988 will be enforced to protect the interests of telco users, it said.

It also assured that the investigation will be conducted transparently and fairly.
