Maxis app lets deaf users ‘experience’ the Takbir

Maxis has introduced a new mobile app that allows deaf Muslims to “experience” the Takbir.

Called Deria Takbir, the app listens to the Takbir and converts sound waves in real-time into cymatic visual patterns and vibration, allowing users to feel the Takbir’s rhythm and melody.

Though the app reportedly has noise cancellation feature, it works better in a quiet environment just like the app Shazam.

Maxis worked with the Malaysian Federation of the Deaf (MFD) to better understand the challenges experienced by the deaf community while developing the app.

“The Takbir has always been an important part of prayer during Aidilfitri, but is something I’ve found challenging to follow as someone who is deaf, said MFD president Mohamad Sazali Shaari.

“The Deria Takbir app, which engages with our heightened sense of sight and touch through visuals and vibrations, lets us experience the takbir in a unique way. I believe this app will make a difference in the lives of the deaf community in Malaysia,”

Maxis also consulted Masjid Ara Damansara Islamic Affairs Officer and Imam Uztaz Mohammad Khairul Mohd Lias during the development of the app.

The app can also be used for the Takbir Haji during Hari Raya Aidil Adha, and it also contains a list of prayers.

Currently, Deria Takbir only works on the iPhone, as it uses the device’s haptic engine to generate the vibration.

You can download the Deria Takbir app from the App Store and for more information visit the Maxis website.
