As more women get into gaming, computer makers like Lenovo are pushing into the sector, seeing strong growth potential while also providing more options for customers.

“Nowadays, it's not just guys gaming. We are definitely moving to cater to the needs of women gamers, who make up nearly half the market globally,” says Lenovo Malaysia general manager Khoo Hung Chuan.

He quoted an Entertainment Software Association (ESA) study which found 41% of gamers were women, the largest groups being those above 50 years old (13%) and under 18 years old (11%).

In contrast, of the 59% of gamers made up of men, the largest groups by age were under 18 years of age (18%), 18 to 35 (17%), and above 50 years of age (13%).

Lenovo's own studies of over 700 Twitch and YouTube influencers and other gamers found its users to be mostly men, with 71% of respondents being males.

Taking note of the shift towards computers dedicated for gaming, Khoo says Lenovo launched its Legion gaming sub-brand and saw sales matching conventional consumer and business markets.

Khoo was unveiling the refreshed Legion gaming machines lineup, starting with the Y530 laptop, which comes in two flavours.

The base version of the Y530 retails at RM3,599 and has an Intel Core i5-8300H processor, 8GB RAM, a GTX 1050 GPU with 2GB memory and a 1TB 5,400RPM HDD. Meanwhile, the upgraded version of the Y530 has a faster Core i7-8750H processor, 16GB RAM, a GTX 1050 with 4GB memory and a solid state drive with 256GB of space and costs RM5,699.

The 15.6in laptop is powered by 8th Gen Intel Core i processors and NVIDIA GeForce GTX graphic processor capable of running games at 60FPS (frames per second) on its 15in FHD screen.

He says the form factor remains relatively sleek at 24mm in thickness and weighing in at only 2.3kg.
