Mozilla has extensively updated its Thunderbird email program and is now offering version 60 for download free of charge.

In addition to making numerous invisible improvements, the developers overhauled the user interface and improved security features as well as the handling of attachments. You can now also choose from several light and dark themes, and the calendar features have been revamped.

If you want to give Thunderbird 60 a go, you'll have to manually download and install the program, since you won't be able to upgrade directly from the current version for now.

Making the switch to the new Thunderbird may also mean that you'll have to do without some of your favourite extensions. According to the release notes, the program only supports customised extensions.

Thunderbird 60 also requires Windows 7, Mac OS 10.9 or Linux GTK 3.4 or later. — dpa
