Huawei unveils P20 Pro with triple cameras

There is little doubt that Huawei is focusing on the camera with its new flagship smartphones, as the P20 Pro has triple cameras while the P20 has two.

The P20 Pro has a 40-megapixel RGB sensor (f/1.8), 20-megapixel monochrome sensor (f/1.6) and 8-megapixel sensor (f/2.4) with telephoto lens (up to 3x optical zoom).

The P20 has a similar setup as its predecessor – a 12-megapixel RGB sensor and 20-megapixel monochrome sensor.

Both also feature large sensors to capture more light with the P20 Pro having a 1/1.7 inch sensor while the P20 has a 1/2.3 inch sensor.

Huawei consumer business group chief executive officer Richard Yu said the P20 series builds on its collaboration with Leica, taking inspiration from artists to continuously evolve its approach to design and innovation.

“With a breakthrough triple camera on the P20 Pro, an advanced dual camera on the P20, and powerful artificial intelligence on both, today’s most vibrant consumers can capture and share the brilliance of the world around them,” he said at the launch at the Grand Palais exhibition centre in Paris, France.

The P20 Pro achieved the highest score yet by smartphone image quality tester, DxOMark, at 109 points, while the P20 scored 102.

Other features include six-axis stabilization, 960fps (frames per second) super slow motion, 24-megapixel selfie camera with AI beautification and 3D portrait lighting.

Both also have ultra-thin bezels and an 18.7:9 screen aspect ratio, with the P20 Pro featuring a 6.1in OLED screen and the P20 a 5.8in screen.

The larger P20 Pro weighs 180g and has a 4,000mAh battery, while the P20 weighs 165g and has a 3,400mAh battery.

The handsets are powered by a Huawei’s Kirin 970 processor and run on Android 8.1.

The P20 Pro has 6GB RAM while the P20 has 4GB RAM, and both have 128GB of storage, though no option to expand memory space via a microSD card.

The P20 Pro has a higher IP67 dust and water resistance rating and stereo speakers, while the P20 has a IP53 rating and a single down-firing speaker.

The smartphones comes in four colours – Black and Midnight Blue, and the new Twilight and Pink Gold, and has a list price of €899 (RM4,299) for the P20 Pro and €649 (RM3,100) for the P20.

However, the pricing may be subject to change in Malaysia, with the official local launch taking place on April 3.
