System optimisation apps claim to make your smartphone faster and free up storage space. But experts believe these so-called cleaner apps don't have much of an effect.

Various consumer rights organisations have concluded that such apps have no tangible benefits at best, and at worst carry malware.

That's because most of the usual clean-up procedures were originally designed for PCs and are simply unnecessary for smartphones.

Many cleaner apps are overloaded with advertising, demand an excessive amount of data and authorisations and are sometimes suspected of spying on users, German consumer website Mobilsicher.de warns.

In addition, some of their so-called features are completely implausible – such as the promise to cool down the processor. There were also a number of cleaner apps which turned out to be malware. — dpa
