Apple's iOS 11.1 update protects the iPhone 7 and newer iPads from the WLAN vulnerability KRACK and addresses an issue in the WebKit browser engine.

A whole host of new emojis, longer battery life and some fixed security issues: iOS 11.1 is the first major update to the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system.

The latest fix protects the iPhone 7 and newer iPads from the WLAN vulnerability KRACK and addresses an issue in the WebKit browser engine, the company says.

Emoji enthusiasts will be able to use some 70 new icons in messenger apps, and 3D touch users can now access the App Switcher by pressing the left-hand side of the screen.

Apple also has fixed some bugs in the photo app. Running the new version on Apple Watches should also be smoother.

The update can be initiated via Settings, then General, then Software Update. — dpa
