Free for all: (From left) Alec King, vice president of product management and Raymond Goh, senior technology advisor, Asia from Veeam Software shared about the merits of the Veeam Endpoint Backup Free solution.

Backup, recovery and virtualisation solutions provider, Veeam Software is providing a free standalone endpoint backup solution to the public via the Web. The product, which is called Veeam Endpoint Backup Free, allows users to backup content from laptops and desktops that run Windows 7 or later.

The software tool also contains bare metal, volume level and file level restore capabilities, alongside several other utility features.

It is currently available for download in beta version -- the full version is expected to be ready by the first half of 2015.

For businesses who make use of this solution when securing data from their corporate machines, it can also be integrated with a Veeam backup repository if the company already has one within its network.

Despite having a history of sharing free software tools with the public, Alec King, vice president for product management at Veeam Software says this is the first time that the organisation is delving into the endpoint solution market segment.

“It’s a new space for us and we’re very keen to disrupt this market. By giving something out for free, we are also getting valuable feedback in terms of market demands,” he says.

He adds that the solution will continue to be available for free even after the full version is released.

“That’s not to say in the future we will not find ways to monetise some of its technologies by integrating it with our other products,” King points out.
