SIMPLIFYING TRAVEL: Passengers on easyJet can now scan their passports via the airline's app.

The low-cost carrier claims to be the first in Europe to enable passport scans for easier online check-in.

Using the camera of a mobile device, users of the easyJet app simply take a photo of their passport ID page showing their name and details, eliminating the need to fill out a long electronic form before downloading a boarding pass.

Travellers can use the feature to check in easily and securely from a smartphone until two hours before takeoff from 110 European airports.

Passport scanning is the latest new feature introduced by the British budget airline, which recently rolled out a real-time flight information system in partnership with Flightradar24.

United Airlines added a passport-scanning feature to its mobile app this summer.

Over 10 million people have downloaded the easyJet mobile app. — AFP/Relaxnews 2014
