AVALANCHE INTEL: Ava Tech SP1 probe device All Rights Reserved

An innovative probe device capable of measuring snowpack structure and predicting slides has been developed by a team in Cambridge, Massachusetts and could reduce the potentially devastating consequences of avalanches this ski season.

After two years in the making, start-up Ava Tech has created a durable, portable device called the SP1 that's capable of taking 5,000 measurements per second, outpacing manual devices of yesteryear by 15 to 20 minutes. We hope it's smart in the other sense, but it's Bluetooth equipped, enabling users to share and discuss data on the company's cloud platform, making it Smart which is a good start.
