McDonald’s joins in the spirit of the FIFA World Cup with its mobile gaming app, McDonald’s Gol! which offers its customers a chance to participate in a fun virtual trick shot challenge. The aim of the game is to “kick” a football into the goal using your finger.

The app, which features augmented reality (AR) technology powered by Qualcomm Vuforia’s Smart Terrain allows players to interact with real life objects as part of the game.

McDonald’s new World Cup themed French fry boxes can be used to trigger special content within the app. Customers who hold up their mobile phones to scan the fry box will see an AR football pitch appear on their screens.

Other objects such as burger boxes or drink cups can also be scanned to become objects in the vritual playing field. Once they are detected within the app, the player can then use these objects to direct the football into the goal.

However, certain parts of the game can still be played without the need to scan the McDonald’s World Cup Fry Box.

Scores earned while playing the game are aggregated from around the world and a winning country is recognised each day on the app’s Leader Table. Players can also earn various badges during gameplay based on their achievements. These include items that can boost their in-game abilities.

Although participating in the game will not earn you any prizes in real life, McDonald’s hopes that the mobile app will encourage its customers to join in the fun of the World Cup and to share their achievements in the game with friends across the globe.

In addition, the app also features FIFA World Cup related content including real-life trick shot stars and curated videos of the best AR gameplay.

There are 12 new French fry box designs available throughout the World Cup period, and they can be purchased at all McDonald’s restaurants nationwide while stocks last. Each of them can be used for mobile gameplay, and the results on-screen are the same regardless of which box is used.

Designs for the fry boxes were crafted by artists from various countries around the world including South Africa, Australia, the United States and many more. The original street artwork used in these designs are said to reflect the beauty and passion attached to football.

The app runs on Apple's iPhone (iOS 6 or higher) and Android (version 2.3.3 or higher) and requires mobile devices with rear camera. To keep up with the McDonald’s Gol! action, look out for the #fryfutbol hashtag on social media or visit http://gol.mcd.com/en.html to learn more about the app.
