IN an increasingly complex and technology-driven economic landscape, a systematic approach to talent development has become a strategic priority for corporate companies, ensuring their long-term competitiveness.

For MNRB Holdings Bhd (MNRB), investment in human capital is not merely a supporting initiative, but one that has evolved into a key pillar of the company’s business strategy.

Through its scholarship programme introduced in 1998, the company has been building a pipeline of highly skilled talent specifically to meet the needs of the nation’s insurance and takaful industry.

To date, a total of RM19.8mil has been channelled, benefiting 736 students nationwide. This initiative not only expands access to higher education, but also serves as a structured and high-impact talent development mechanism.

MNRB’s interim president and group chief executive officer Datuk Rudy Rodzila Che Lamin said the programme was designed with a dual objective – to widen access to education while simultaneously supporting the sustainable development of the industry.

“This approach enables us to identify and shape talent from an early stage, ensuring that skills acquired align with the company’s operational needs,” he said.

Rudy added that the strategy helps the organisation anticipate and secure talent early, complementing recruitment from the wider market.

The programme also combines academic sponsorship with industrial training, professional mentoring and a clear career development pathway. As a result, graduates produced through the programme not only possess technical capabilities, but are also ready to enter the workforce.

Fields of study offered are aligned with the current and future needs of the industry, including actuarial science, data science, artificial intelligence, law, risk management, Syariah and engineering.

The emphasis on areas such as environmental science and geology also reflects the industry’s growing need to address sustainability issues and climate change risks.

To ensure returns on investment, the programme includes a structured service bond. More than 90% of scholarship recipients join MNRB upon completing their studies, supporting workforce continuity and reducing new recruitment costs.

At the same time, the initiative has delivered significant social impact, with approximately half of the scholarships awarded to students from the B40 and M40 income groups. This approach opens up opportunities for more high-potential students to pursue higher education.

Recipient selection is not based solely on academic excellence, but also takes into account leadership qualities, adaptability and co-curricular involvement, in line with the demands of today’s working world.

Interest in the programme has continued to grow, with an average of 220 applications received annually over the past five years, before surging to more than 600 applications in the latest cycle.

For 2026, MNRB aims to award 20 scholarships, including five under the Lestari Cemerlang initiative, with an allocation of around RM680,000.

Applications have been opened since January 31 and will close on April 13.

Looking ahead, MNRB plans to expand the scope of the programme through the addition of more fields of study and by strengthening collaborations with academic institutions and industry partners, including through twinning programmes that provide international exposure.

In an increasingly intense competition for talent, strategic talent development is seen as a key driver of organisational sustainability.

MNRB’s efforts reflect a long-term commitment to strengthening the workforce ecosystem, in line with the evolving needs of the industry.
