Nanta speaking at the BEM National Engineering Conference (NEC) 2025 last month, where he emphasised the pivotal role of engineers in Malaysia’s development and the key contributions of Sabah and Sarawak.
FOR the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), an agency under the Works Ministry, this year marks another milestone with the launch of the BEM Roadshow and Open Day 2025 in Sabah and Sarawak.
The event will serve as a platform for the engineering community to connect, strengthen industry networks and inspire the younger generation to explore the world of engineering.
It will take place from Sept 24 to 25 at Kota Kinabalu Marriott Hotel, Sabah and from Sept 27 to 28 at RAIA Hotel and Convention Centre in Kuching, Sarawak.
Sabah and Sarawak’s wealth of natural resources, cultural diversity and renewable energy potential has long been a driving force for national growth. More than just points on the development map, the two states are central to Malaysia’s economic strength, energy security and national stability.
Hosting the programme in both states, BEM noted, not only keeps the local engineering community abreast of the latest regulatory developments but also empowers them to drive economic progress while upholding safety, health and public interest.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, at BEM’s National Engineering Conference last month, emphasised, “Sabah and Sarawak are great states, equal to any other state in Malaysia. We want to celebrate regional inclusivity as a pillar of Malaysia Madani’s development.”
This aspiration aligns with the National Construction Policy 2030 (NCP 2030) under the Works Ministry, guided by the principle of “Digitising the Construction Sector”.
Through the BEM Roadshow and Open Day 2025, a variety of programmes have been designed specifically for the engineering community in Sabah and Sarawak.
Highlights of the two-day event include an international segment with sessions such as “Global Reach, Local Expertise: How Malaysian Engineers Can Expand Internationally” and “Going Global: Business Opportunities & Challenges”, giving engineers exposure to global opportunities and challenges.
A professional practice and development segment will cover ethics, responsibilities of engineers in various fields and continuous professional development to enhance expertise while a conferment ceremony will celebrate newly registered professional engineers who will go on to contribute to technological, economic and national development.
To nurture future engineers, engineering technologists and engineering technicians, BEM runs initiatives that inspire school students to pursue engineering and provide university students with real industry exposure through the STEM Outreach Programme and the Future Engineering Talents Gateway.
The BEM Roadshow and Open Day 2025 will see the attendance of the entire ecosystem, registered engineers, academics, school and university students, industry players and government agencies.
Nanta added, “Engineers don’t just build infrastructure, they build the future. When engineers succeed, industries grow stronger, and ultimately, the people benefit.
“Through the BEM Roadshow and Open Day 2025, we recognise the contributions of local engineers, strengthen industry networks and at the same time inspire the younger generation to be the future of Malaysia’s engineering.
“We want to see the young generation in Sabah and Sarawak become outstanding engineering teams, capable of competing globally while remaining rooted in their homeland to build these states.”
Under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13), Sabah and Sarawak continue to receive special focus through significant development budget allocations in line with the Federal Government’s aspiration to ensure regional balance.
These allocations also support key state policies such as Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) and Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 in Sarawak, both of which emphasise economic transformation, environmental sustainability, digitalisation and improving the people’s standard of living.
Within this framework, engineering across various sectors plays a vital role in driving the success of these policies. Through the Roadshow and Open Day, BEM reinforces its commitment to ensuring engineers remain at the heart of Malaysia’s balanced and sustainable growth.
