YOUR well-being should be an important factor when considering your university of choice.
The university years can be both a challenging and rewarding period in a young person’s life, both mentally and physically.
Hence, choosing a university and campus with the right student experience system to support you should be a priority.
Academic transition and flexibility
Transitioning from high school to university is a big change in your routine and your life.
To help with this important step and the decision that needs to be made, the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) has a summer school programme which offers young people a taste of campus life.
With the right people and environment, the transition to campus life can be a seamless and enjoyable experience.
UNM takes pride in assigning personal tutors to every new student upon enrolment, offering pastoral guidance throughout their studies.
“Students have shown a growing inclination towards a more interactive and tech-integrated approach to learning,” says UNM registrar Patrick Joseph.
“There is a noticeable preference for shorter bursts of information. This shift has heightened the use of hybrid technology, in line with the student’s comfort level with tech tools in the classroom.
“Interestingly, the welcome return to physical classrooms signifies a desire for face-to-face interactions. Students also favour hands-on activities and interactive sessions over passive lectures, showcasing a preference for active engagement.”
An ecosystem supporting mental wellness and disability
Prioritising mental wellness is paramount, especially for young people navigating the ebb and flow of campus life.
Understanding the challenges during this critical transitional period in life, UNM provides an ecosystem comprising mental health counsellors who offer critical support to students in and around the campus and a 24/7 emergency line.
In addition to a lush campus environment associated with a calming and restorative space, UNM demonstrates proactive efforts to promote mental wellness through various initiatives.
These include student-body collaborations, “First Responder to Crisis” training for academics, wardens, and hall tutors, as well as an annual “Healthy U Week” campaign, among others.
Inclusivity and diversity are also key UNM pillars. The university believes in offering the best opportunity for students from all walks of life, including those with disabilities, to experience a fulfilling campus experience.
Disability Liaison Officers present in all faculties at UNM are equipped to assist students registered under the Disability Advisory Services, a standout offering of the university.
Empowering extracurricular pursuits
Distinctive in its support for extracurricular passions, UNM encourages student-led activities.
Whether you’re an eager trailblazer or a reserved individual with budding interests, UNM offers a conducive and safe environment to cultivate your skills and passions.
This is evident through UNM’s range of 90 student-led clubs and societies, inter-university events and incentives such as the MAD (Making A Difference) Money Fund and Students’ Association (SA) Grant which empowers student-led initiatives with positive community impact.
With an impressive 90% overall student satisfaction rate in 2022, UNM takes pride in nurturing a holistic academic experience with key considerations for mental wellness and diverse interests.
Fostering an inclusive and empowering campus atmosphere, UNM is invested in preparing students to find their place in the world and to succeed in life.
