PETRONAS and local oil and gas, services and equipment (OGSE) vendor collaboration vital for industry growth

PETRONAS recognises the accomplishments of Sarawak's oil and gas, services and equipment (OGSE) vendors and service providers who have contributed to the growth of the oil and gas industry in the state.

A total of 49 Sarawakian vendors were commemorated at an event in Kuching on Dec 6, compared to 11 vendors commemorated last year. The commemoration awards were presented by PETRONAS vice-president of group procurement Freida Amat.

This marks the progress achieved in the industry as well as the robust collaboration between PETRONAS, the state government and local OGSE industry players.

At the event, Freida said PETRONAS had cultivated strong partnerships with the state government, petroleum arrangement contractors (PACs) and local OGSE vendors to enhance the robustness of the Sarawak oil and gas ecosystem.

She said these collaborative efforts were important in contributing to the growth and resilience of Sarawak's OGSE ecosystem.

"Today we are here to commemorate the achievements of 49 Sarawak vendors who have successfully received contracts and/or purchase orders from PETRONAS and PACs from January to October 2023.

"The increase from 11 vendors commemorated in 2022 reflects the growth of Sarawak vendors in harnessing opportunities available in the OGSE industry," she said.

‘Together we will continue to join efforts to enhance Sarawak vendors' capabilities and OGSE industry talent development – a progressive journey which will bring about longer term impact to Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole,’ said Freida Amat.‘Together we will continue to join efforts to enhance Sarawak vendors' capabilities and OGSE industry talent development – a progressive journey which will bring about longer term impact to Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole,’ said Freida Amat.

Freida commended the Sarawakian vendors for successfully obtaining jobs outside the state, saying it was a testament to their resilience and attractiveness in Malaysia's OGSE industry.

"We are grateful to have the state government and PACs on board with us in supporting local vendors, especially in overcoming challenges in the current times and environment," she added.

According to Freida, PETRONAS has introduced various programmes over the years to strengthen the OGSE ecosystem, such as its vendor development programme (VDP) to nurture a robust vendor pool and the vendor financing programme (VFP).

About 30 Sarawak vendors have received close to RM330mil in financing access through VFP's financial partners, she said.

In addition, PETRONAS organised the Sarawak OGSE partners' day in October, bringing over 300 vendors to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange.

"However, there is still much work to be done in the space of capability and talent development in ensuring the attractiveness of the OGSE industry in becoming more competitive while forging a path towards a sustainable ecosystem.

"Together we will continue to join efforts to enhance Sarawak vendors' capabilities and OGSE industry talent development – a progressive journey which will bring about longer term impact to Sarawak and Malaysia as a whole," Freida said.

She also stressed the importance of quality, health, safety and environment as well as integrity in the journey to advance together.

"We must uphold the highest level of corporate governance and maintain zero tolerance on bribery and corruption.

"With our continuous partnership between PETRONAS, the state government and PACs, we hope to leverage on cross-industry experience, insights and knowledge that will enable us to chart new frontiers for the OGSE industry," she said.

Freida highlighted PETRONAS' commitment in combating climate change, in line with global targets for oil and gas industry players discussed at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai which concluded on Dec 12. These include net zero operations by 2050, net zero upstream methane emissions by 2030, and zero routine flaring by 2030.

She said these targets resonated strongly with PETRONAS, which had its own pathway towards net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

"At PETRONAS, we aim to play a key role in energy transition by focusing on energy security and at the same time delivering energy solutions responsibly.

"It is timely for us to work together by leveraging our collective strength, expertise and resources to build a resilient ecosystem and to drive the industry forward.

"This will also lead to achieving a sustainable low carbon future in a just and responsible manner," she said.

The commemoration event served as a platform to strengthen the collaboration between PETRONAS and the state government in the oil and gas and energy space.

Both parties remain committed to enhance a stable, conducive business and investment environment – to strengthen the capacity and capabilities which will further contribute to Sarawak and Malaysia’s economic growth.
